Meet the Mountain Dulcimer - B1

This introduction to the mountain dulcimer class will cover tuning the instrument, how to read tablature, strumming, counting, and play a couple simple songs.


Soft n Gentle Melodies on the Mountain Dulcimer - B2

You will play a couple tunes in this class - Aura Lee, Rebecca's Child and learn more about time signatures, counting, fingering, melody, and harmony.


Simple Rounds and Instant Harmony - B3

Keep building your skills on this wonderful folk instrument and learn to play several simple rounds. Adding harmony to a melody will also help tunes come alive.


Easy Waltzes - B4

We will learn two or three easy tunes in 3/4 time.


Smooth Out Your Playing on the Mountain Dulcimer - B5

In this techniques workshop, we will work on strumming at a steady speed playing half, quarter and eighth notes without changing the speed of our strumming or flatpicking. Doing this, it will be easier to maintain a constant tempo and will be much easier to play those quicker tunes.

Jump Into That Jam - playing backup chords - C3

This workshop is for those players who are a little intimidated with jams, either because they don't know the tunes or the tunes are a little quicker or advanced. We will learn some basic chord fingerings in the key of D and some strumming techniques. Then we will start listening for chord changes and learning which chord to go to for that change.


Transposing Tunes on the Mt Dulcimer - C4

You will learn how to transpose music from one key to another on the mountain dulcimer.

Other Instruments

Beginning Mandolin - A1

From 9 to 10 in First room with Dick Kimmel for Beg.

This class covers the basics of playing bluegrass, old-time, and folk mandolin. Dick Kimmel will demonstrate picking and fretting techniques. We will go over basic chords, scales, and techniques needed to play instrumental solos. Dick will discuss how to use tablatures and standard music notation for the wealth of music that is available for mandolin. Using tabs, we will learn an easy tune or two and also cover jamming techniques. A beginning mandolin player will leave this workshop with knowledge of the skills it takes to really play a mandolin.


Mandolin II - A2

From 10:15 to 11:15 in First room with Dick Kimmel for Adv. Beg.

This class is geared for mandolin players who want to learn more advanced playing techniques. Learn how to improve techniques that commonly limit playing abilities. Instruction includes playing tunes and lead breaks, playing with feeling, melody breaks vs. improvising, use of scales in developing mandolin solos, improvisation, advanced chords and rhythm ‘chop’ techniques, and advanced scales. We will learn a mandolin or two using tablature.


Beginning Clawhammer Banjo - A4

From 3 to 4 in First room with Dick Kimmel for Beg.

This class covers the important basics of clawhammer banjo. We demonstrate and discuss the right-hand position and the bump-ditty picking rhythm, tunings and use of a capo (G tuning, Double-C tuning, C tuning), left hand techniques (fretting, slides, pulls, and hammers), jamming techniques and jamming with songs you don't know, and learning tunes by ear and by tablature (includes tune demonstrations and tablatures). A beginning clawhammer banjo player will leave this workshop with a complete knowledge of the skills it takes to properly play a variety of banjo tunes in various tunings.


Garden Herb Sleep Aid - Make It Class, vendor area - A4

From 3 to 4 in First room with Pam Thompson for All

Master herbalist, Pam Thomson of Giving Ground, will lead a workshop for you to make a 'sleep Ted E. Bear,' a small dream pillow to take home, often real help for ourselves, elders, and small children. There will be handouts that touch on good sleep strategies and benefits of herbs to even veterans.


Clawhammer Banjo II - A5

From 4:10 to 5:10 in First room with Dick Kimmel for Adv.Beg./Int.

Clawhammer Banjo is geared for clawhammer banjo players who want to add technique and confidence to their playing. Dick Kimmel will discuss how to improve techniques that are limiting your playing abilities. Instruction includes tunes and expanding your repertoire (with tune demonstrations and tablatures), advanced right-hand technique (double-thumbing, Galax techniques), when to use left-hand techniques (slides, hammers, and pulls), advanced tunings (modal, Sandy River Belle tuning, open C), and solving fingernail problems, leaving bump-ditty patterns and playing waltzes, and playing with other styles of music.

Songwriting Workshop - A3

From 11:30 to 12:30 in First room with Dick Kimmel for All levels / instruments

You will dig into the experiences of Dick Kimmel over 50 years of writing songs and instrumentals. There is no magic formula for songwriting, but looking at examples of how songs are structured and how lyrics flow certainly helps when a creative moment happens. Dick will discuss the different ways he’s been moved to compose, copyrighting your songs, publishing and royalties when your songs are recorded, recording and distributing demos, and developing lead sheets for your songs.
